On a Firestick or an Android box, install IPTV Smarters Pro. On an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, install Smarters Player Lite. For most people that is the whole answer, because the developer ships one build per platform and your device makes the choice for you. The rest of this page is for anyone with a device that can run more than one build, and for anyone trying to work out why the names keep changing.

The short version: IPTV Smarters Lite and IPTV Smarters Pro are two apps from one developer, WHMCS Smarters, aimed at different platforms. They take the same logins and show the same channels. The third name you will see, IPTV Smarters Player, is an older Android build that predates Pro. Everything below comes from the developer’s own site and App Store listings.

What the three IPTV Smarters versions actually are

Every one of these takes an Xtream login or an M3U link, then pulls your channels, guide and on-demand library into one interface. The difference is which device each is built for, and how much it does once it is there.

BuildBuilt forWhat it doesWhere to get it
IPTV Smarters ProAndroid, Fire TV, Windows, MacThe full player: live, movies, series, catch-up, recording where the provider allows, multi-screen, EPG settings, parental controlsThe developer’s site (APK, Windows and Mac installers)
Smarters Player LiteiPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, some Samsung and LG setsSame logins, lighter feature set; no recording or catch-upThe App Store, or the TV’s own store
IPTV Smarters PlayerAndroidThe older basic build that predates ProThe developer’s site

For the install steps on each platform, the three login methods and what each error message means, see our IPTV Smarters Pro download and setup guide.

Lite is not a “speed mode” of Pro that you can pick on a Firestick. It is the Apple build. On a Fire TV device, Pro is the current app.

IPTV Smarters Lite vs Player vs Player Pro: the quick comparison

Smarters Player LiteiPhone, iPad, Apple TV, MacNoNoApple devices; live-only viewing
IPTV Smarters ProFire TV, Android, Windows, MacYes, provider permittingYesLiving-room TVs and computers

If you only read one thing, read that: Pro for the living room, Lite for anything Apple, the old Player only when Pro will not run.

What each version includes

Smarters Player Lite, for Apple devices

Lite is the only official Smarters route on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, so on those devices the choice makes itself. It keeps the three content areas (live TV, movies, series) and the programme guide, and leaves out recording and catch-up.

  • The simplest install of the three: straight from the App Store
  • The same Xtream or M3U login as the other builds
  • No recording or catch-up, so a viewer who rewinds live games will miss them
  • Some platforms show a one-time activation in the listing; check before you install

If you only ever watch live, the missing extras are unlikely to matter.

IPTV Smarters Pro, for Fire TV, Android and computers

Pro is the build to install on a Fire TV device, an Android TV box, a Windows PC or a Mac. Its advantage for sport is control over the timeline: catch-up lets you go back on channels where the provider keeps an archive, and recording is available where the provider and device support it. Multi-screen puts more than one channel on screen at once, using one connection per stream.

  • Catch-up and recording, provider permitting
  • Multi-screen for a house that wants two games up at once, on a plan with enough connections
  • Fuller settings: decoder choice, buffer size, EPG time shift, parental controls
  • A moderate learning curve for the extras

Set it up before an event you care about, not during it. The settings pages are where the value lives, and they take a little exploring.

IPTV Smarters Player, the older Android build

The standard Player predates Pro and still installs on Android. It has a narrow job: light, ageing hardware that the current build makes sluggish.

  • Same logins, same channels, fewer extras
  • No reason to choose it on a device that runs Pro comfortably

If your Firestick is a very old model and Pro is slow on the home screen, this is the fallback. On anything recent, install Pro.

Plus, Pro Max and other look-alike names

Search for Smarters and you will find more names than the three above, including IPTV Smarters Plus. Some are older releases, some are provider-branded versions, and some are unrelated apps borrowing a familiar name and icon. The builds on this page are the ones the developer lists itself.

Before you install anything with a similar name:

  1. Check the publisher. On the App Store or Play Store the publisher should be WHMCS Smarters.
  2. Prefer the developer’s site for APKs. A random mirror can serve an outdated or modified file.
  3. Ignore anything that promises free channels. Smarters apps are players; they never come with content of their own.

If your provider has given you its own branded app, use that; it will usually be a Smarters-style player pre-set for their service.

Which version should sports viewers pick

Match the app to the device first, then to how you watch.

Choose Smarters Player Lite if you watch on an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV. It is the only official Smarters build there.

Choose IPTV Smarters Pro on a Firestick, Android box, Windows PC or Mac. It is the current full build, with catch-up and recording for the evenings you want to go back over something you missed.

Choose the older IPTV Smarters Player only when Pro will not run properly on an ageing Android device.

On a TV, if Smarters is not to your taste at all, our 4K player app guide covers TiviMate, OTT Navigator and others, and our Firestick sports setup guide walks the install.

Setup notes that apply to all three

Whichever build you land on, the setup path is close to identical: install the app, enter your login, and let the guide populate.

  • Load your login the day before a big event, not at kickoff. The first guide load on a large service takes a minute or two.
  • On a Firestick, let Pro finish opening before you start switching channels.
  • Sort your favourites once, up front, so the channels you use most are a couple of clicks away.
  • Get the builds from the developer or the App Store rather than a look-alike listing.

The part people forget: the service matters more than the app

Any of these builds displays whatever the subscription sends. If a stream stalls, the usual suspects are the provider’s servers and your own connection, and changing the app touches neither. Once the feed and your connection are right, the version choice comes down to platform and features, as it should.

To pick a service to run behind it, our best IPTV for sports in the USA table compares four services on published prices, catalogue sizes and trial terms. The top pick, VIPSATV, has a 24-hour trial that takes no card, so you can try your chosen build with it before paying.

Our verdict

Your device picks the build. Smarters Player Lite on anything Apple, IPTV Smarters Pro on a Firestick, Android box or computer, and the older Player only as a fallback for tired hardware. Whichever one you install, check it on a real game during a free trial before committing to a long plan.

Worth knowing

Why the developer ships two builds

Apple's App Store has its own rules about what a player app may do and how it is distributed, which is one reason the Apple build carries a different name and a lighter feature set.

Android, Fire TV, Windows and Mac builds are distributed from the developer's own site, so the Pro build ships with the fuller settings: catch-up, recording where the provider allows it, and multi-screen.

The practical upshot is that you rarely choose between the two. Your device chooses for you, and the only real decision is whether an old Android device needs the older Player build instead of Pro.

How to compare player builds on your own setup

If your device can run more than one build, change one thing at a time. Load the same login into each, on the same connection, in the same evening. If you change the provider or the time of night as well, you cannot tell whether the app or the network caused what you saw.

Try real use rather than a menu tour: start a live channel, leave it playing, switch channels a few times, open the guide while a stream runs. Then keep the build that feels right on your device; the content is the same either way.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between IPTV Smarters Lite and Player Pro?

They are two apps from the same developer for different platforms. Smarters Player Lite is the App Store build for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac with a lighter feature set. IPTV Smarters Pro is the full player for Android, Fire TV, Windows and Mac, with catch-up, recording and multi-screen where the provider supports them. Both accept the same logins.

Which IPTV Smarters version is best for a Firestick?

IPTV Smarters Pro, installed through the Downloader app, because the Amazon Appstore does not carry it and Player Lite is not an Android build. The older IPTV Smarters Player also runs on Fire TV, but it predates Pro and only makes sense on a very old stick that struggles with the Pro build.

Is IPTV Smarters Lite good for watching sports?

On the Apple devices it is built for, it does the job a live viewer needs: live channels, the programme guide and on-demand from the same login. It does not include recording or catch-up, so a live-only viewer loses little.

Can IPTV Smarters Lite record shows?

No. Player Lite is the lighter build and leaves out recording and catch-up. For either, you need IPTV Smarters Pro on an Android, Fire TV, Windows or Mac device, and a provider that supports catch-up.

What is IPTV Smarters Plus?

Several apps use the Smarters name with an extra word such as Plus. The builds this page covers are the ones the developer, WHMCS Smarters, lists on its own site and App Store page. Before installing anything with a similar name, check that the publisher on the listing is WHMCS Smarters.

Do all three IPTV Smarters versions use the same login?

Yes. Pro, Player Lite and the older Player all accept an Xtream login or an M3U link and show the same channels, guide and on-demand library from the same subscription. Only the interface and the extras differ.
